The flowers have a sweet coconut smell. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. Common gorse is a mainstay of native UK wildlife habitats from moor, to heath, to coastal region, to town and city garden, providing food and shelter for insects and birds. The main flowering period for the common gorse is January to June, but flowers may be produced at other times. In fact, there is hardly a month when the common gorse will not produce flowers somewhere in the UK. Hence the traditional saying ‘When gorse it out of bloom, kissing is out of season’. In days gone by, common gorse was used as fodder for livestock, fuel for firing bread ovens, and to make floor and chimney brushes. The flowers were even used as a colourant for painting Easter Eggs. February 2020 - Chaenomeles x superba ‘Crimson and Gold’ AGM Chaenomeles are native to Southeastern Asia, and are related to the quince we all know (Cydonia oblonga) and the Chinese quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis). ‘Crimson and Gold’ is a woody shrub, of spreading habit that bears deep crimson red, waxy, cup-shaped flowers with golden yellow stamens on bare branches in late winter. Small oval green leaves follow after flowering begins. Sweetly fragrant yellow quinces, 5cm long, form in autumn which can be used in preserves. I have three other Chaenomeles plants of different cultivars that flower later in the year. Iris reticulata is also known as netted Iris or golden netted Iris. This is due to the fibrous net that encases its bulbs. The plant is widely cultivated in temperate regions, but is actually native to Russia, Turkey, the Caucasus, and northern Iran. Iris reticulata grow well in moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. February 2020 - Pulmonaria rubra var. albocorollata Pulmonarias are commonly called ‘Lungwort’, due to the resemblance of their often spotted leaf surface to lung tissue . Pulmonaria rubra var. albocorollata is the white corolla red lungwort. It is early-flowering and the leaves are NOT spotted. The drooping terminal clusters of pure white funnel-shaped flowers are light up a shady border at the bottom of one of my plots at this time of the year. March 2020 - Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ Magnolia × loebneri is a hybrid of two Magnolia species, the Japanese Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata crossed by Garteninspektor Max Löbner of Pillnitz, Germany, shortly before World War I. The selection, 'Leonard Messel' is a chance hybrid that was discovered in the gardens of Colonel Leonard Messel’s Nymans estate in Sussex. It is a late season deciduous magnolia which bears fragrant pink, goblet-shaped flowers, to 10cm in width, that become star-shaped as they open. The petals have pale shell pink upper surfaces and darker pink-purple lower ones. As with many deciduous magnolias, flowers appear before the foliage. ‘Leonard Messel’ is a hardy, compact, slow-growing, multi-stemmed small flowering tree or large shrub. It can attain a height of 8m and a width of 8m. ‘Leonard Messel’ grows well in moist, well-drained acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. It’s just coming into bloom. March 2020 - Tulips! All of the tulips that are in flower at the moment are naturalised. One set, planted late in a trough, has a way to go before I see any blooms. It is a late season tulip anyway. Tulips are native to the steppes and mountainous temperate regions stretching from southern Europe to central Asia.They have become naturalised in many places. The name ‘tulip’ is thought to be derived from ‘Dulband’ a Persian word for turban, which the flower may have been thought to resemble. In my experience, it’s a toughie too, withstanding harsh winters quite well. This deciduous shrub produces small furry grey buds, which open to reveal small goblet-shaped flowers in spring. Flowers are wine-red on the outside, but soon fade to pale pink when fully open. It always surprises me by continuing to flower sporadically throughout summer and into the autumn. Unusually, flowers are produced along the stems and as well as the tips. I actually inherited it on one of my plots and have been pruning it gently each year to try to regenerate it slowly. When it became mine, it was in a bad state, straggly and sparsely leaved. It was, and still is heavily encrusted with lichen. I must say, the jury is out for me on lichen. For me, this was about 1 cup of sugar (er, I think). Add 1 tablespoon of gravy browning to colour and add savoury balance. Use more or less, depending on how dark you want the pudding to be (and whether you started out with brown or white bread). Add other flavourings: Juice from half a green lime; 1 heaped teaspoon of ground mixed spice; 2 teaspoons of vanilla. I added almond essence but found it unnecessary. You may like it though ..
